A Few of the Things I did on my Birthday weekend.

  1. Picked up an award for an awesome title sequence we made.
  2. Got stranded over night in that London.
  3. Talked for hours with most excellent friend, whilst travelling through the very beautiful Englandshire and that London, on various bits of public transport.
  4. Got invited to Slovenia.
  5. Attended a Superhero-Disco Party with 2 youngest, fielded/policed inter-child violence and cheese throwing.
  6. Stayed in the most extroadinary window-less house of a lovely man I had never met before.
  7. Got told told I didn’t look my age more times than was really appropriate or necessary, (but was still nice none-the-less).
  8. Had 6 paintings made for me.
  9. Ate red meat for the first time in 17 years.
  10. Met a man who’s photo I wished I taken to post on here.
  11. Fell asleep whilst eating cake (not recommended).
  12. Understood the value of resolve.
  13. Felt wretched.
  14. Cried at least 3 times (may be more I can’t remember).
  15. Filled up with gratitude and hope so much I nearly took off like a barrage balloon from Bristol Temple Meads platform.

Two Sided Week

1. Good Thing.

The Animate Journal was featured on the excellent 4mations website. They said:

“I’m not really sure what to make of Paul’s animated experiments but there is something hypnotic and mesmerizing about these snippets of life. It’s like dipping a toe in somebody else’s sensorial experience, vaguely voyeuristic without the seedy Big Brother connotations. Which is a good thing, because somehow I doubt an animator’s lifestyle could compete with the glossy glamour of watching a Z-list celebrity painting their toenails.”

2. Not So Good Thing

The promising 5lights tumblr project ended this week. It was shaping up to be something very special, and I was due to be a Monday person on it for a month around autumn. I’ve started concocting four “pieces” and may follow through with these anyway.

All the best to Lou and Katie for their future projects.

Enjoy August.

Glastonphant

Had excellent time watching Glastonbury footage over the weekend, although the beeb were a bit stingey with new acts on freeview.

Cried about 5 times.

Would like to post some YouTubes, but they’ve all been taken down. The Curious can go and check out the online stuff here. Its very incomplete, but better than nothing.

Highlights were Bruce singing “The River” (he was actually visibley steaming like a horse, ffs (47:30)), The Specials, Yeah Yeah Yeahs (obviously), La Roux, Metronomy, Blurs comeback (very emotional), Neil Young showing everyone how to play guitar, watching Madness with the kiddies (eldest made everyone flags (including important toys) to wave, Bon Iver, Bat for Lashes (she is from outerspace), Lady Gaga (two words: firework tits), Nick Cave and more other stuff than I care to mention.

And one day I will manage to go again, ideally in the form of provider rather than punter, so maybe see you there.

Warren Ellis on the above mentioned Springsteen MOMENT:

“And he’s just blown the authenticity
thing and gone into supermystification, because it
looks like he’s got an electromagnetic halo, curls of
glowing, pearly white light rising up from and playing
around his head and shoulders while he stands there
in near-silhouette…. He looks like he’s The Last Rock Star, the Ascended
Master who glows in the dark.”

Toad now on Vimeo

Toad from Paul Greer on Vimeo.

This was a project that was very long in the making. It began as very heavily storyboarded drawn piece based on a poem and the piece of music I had.

It slowly degenerated into the above.

Made in Maya.

So recently I submitted it to a few festivals with the following synopsis:

God’s taps gleamed far above, like Chomolungma’s peak, but they leaked . The Devil’s toad sat by the death plug unable to progress beyond early meiotic division. Although distressed by Charons pet nymphs, it gained succour from the drip and stole time before new washers arrived.
Short psychedelic whimsey.
