At BDH we have been working with scientists at the University of Bristol to produce visualisations of 3D High resolution brain MRI scans which help show “the brain in action”. Some of the results of this work is to be shown as part of a free event at the We The Curious 3D Planetarium in Bristol on Monday 2nd July 2018.
The remarkable inner workings of our growing brain presented in Virtual Reality and 360° Dome. Secrets of Brain Health is a pioneering collaboration between University of Bristol and multi-award winning BDH Immersive to be presented in VR and Digital Dome. The project addresses challenges in neuroscience and how the complex neural networks are formed throughout the human lifespan.
More information and tickets are available on Eventbrite.
Beginning a large project of uploading old notebook pages. These are not high res scans as that would considerably increase the amount of time needed, so these would have to do for now.
These are all generally going up on Instagram first.

“I studied the classical effects from classical films. I don’t know only the new techniques, I know the old techniques. When you were talking about compositing an image, the language is still the same – matte lines, roto, matte paintings. You’re using the same language as before. Grain, haze, atmospheric dispersion, specularity – the language is the same.”
“Like magic, crime, and power, CGI works best when undetected.”
“Orphanages are dense and harmonious living spaces housing hundreds of children under same roof simultaneously. Abandoned Jewish Orphanage Building in Ortaköy (OHR-tah-keuy) Istanbul (also known as El Orfelinato) has been home for thousand lives during its century old history. It holds the memory of the past in worn stairs and layers of paint.
“El Orfelinato means ‘The Orphanage’ in Spanish. The name has been used by Sephardi Jews (Jews from Spain) community in Istanbul for decades. Sephardi Jews have a 500 year history in Istanbul since they were forced to migrate with mass conversions and executions by Catholic Monarchs in Iberia in 15th century.
“oddviz sheds light upon the visual and spatial memory of El Orfelinato, documenting it as it is with photogrammetry and presenting it in doll house view.”
Yesterday BBC Earth released the “Prequel” for the forthcoming Blue Planet 2. It features the title sequence we have been working on at BDH.
Radiohead rerecorded their track “Bloom” (originally written about the first series of Blue Planet) with series composer Hans Zimmer especially for the occasion.
Here is Radiohead performing Bloom live back in 2011.
“I became fed up with animation for several reasons. Even though my work had a big impact, I kept going broke making film after film, and even doing high profile jobs was not very sustainable for the kinds of projects I wanted to do. In animation you tend to always be getting shafted by people. People just love shafting animators all day long for some reason. And very few really appreciate what you’re doing.
I also know many people who direct animated features or have their own TV shows and they’re not exactly happy people, which is to say, most of them are miserable. So it started feeling like a dead end. At the same time I started playing with game engines and getting ideas in that direction, so I just followed that.”
David O’Reilly’s game Everything is available for PS4 and Steam.
At BDH we made some pretty delicious graphics for this series on the chemistry of food.
Michael Mosley and James Wong reveal the physics, chemistry and biology hidden inside our food. They travel the world in a culinary adventure to search for the origins of our favourite foods and using specialist photography and CGI, they take us on a journey inside the most sumptuous food, right down to the molecular level.
You can see a promo here featuring some of the work we did.
Watch out for the tongue and tastebud sequences ;-).
